Proton therapy center opens in Irving, Texas

Texas Center for Proton Therapy in Irving delivered proton beam radiation treatment to its first patients on Tuesday, opening three months ahead of its original schedule.
It’s the first cancer treatment center of its type in North Texas. Before it opened, Dallas-Fort Worth was the largest metropolitan area without a proton beam cancer treatment center, with the nearest at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City.
Texas Center for Proton Therapy is the only center in the state that offers the latest generation proton therapy technology, including image-guided pencil-beam scanning in multiple treatment rooms, which delivers treatment to tumors with more precision than traditional radiation. The accuracy of proton therapy minimizes damage to healthy tissue surrounding tumors and reduces side effects.
It’s especially important for pediatric patients whose bodies are still growing and developing, and in adult patients with cancers in highly sensitive areas such as the brain, spine, chest, prostate, head and neck.
